Heading down the road Alex observed the vehicles that were on the road, both rusted very badly and damaged beyond use. Alex was never one to like cars, but was fascinated with technology that was used in the 21st century; he loved to learn and discover new things in books or in person, his father James and Jonas always said that Alex was a swift learner, and picked up things quicker than other children in the vault.
Alex finally made it to the town only find that all of house's there were destroyed, but still were standing up in the wastes. Moving forward to the town hoping to find anyone in the destruction of the town, Alex noticed a sign leading to the town which had the name Springvale on it.
Alex started looking inside the ruin house's for a single person in Springvale, but not finding anyone except for rubble and things left behind by the people who once lived in them. After looking in the few houses in the area, Alex heard music far in the distance which was coming from the distance heading towards Springvale.
Moving out of the ruined house to see the source of the music, Alex wondered who or what was playing music out here in the wasteland. That's when he saw a round object floating towards Springvale and himself; Alex got a better look at the object which was a robot with antennas sticking out from the back along with what looked like a weapon on the bottom of it.
That's when the robot floated closer towards Springvale, and the music became a little clearer to hear, Alex recognized the song that was playing "America the Beautiful;" which had played in Alex's US history class many times during his time in the vault. When the robot got closer to Alex, it stopped and looked at Alex as if the robot where observing him while the patriotic music was still playing. After a few minutes passed, the robot floated off towards the direction where Alex had walked a little while ago.
Alex wondered who would be using a bot to play patriotic music to an empty world, but Alex decided to move on and head out of Springvale in order to find any signs of human life. Heading down the road Alex noticed a sign up ahead with the name Megaton on it, along with an arrow that was pointing down the road.
This made Alex felt a little more hopeful about finding people out here, and his father as well. Moving faster down the broken road, Alex couldn't wait to see people out here, and to find his dad so he could convince him to come back to the vault in order to fix everything.
Continuing up the broken road, Alex came across the same sign that he encountered before he left Springvale to find Megaton. Alex headed right where the sign pointed towards; That's when he could see large pieces of metal sticking out from the distance which he thought was Megaton.
Walking to Megaton Alex noticed a few places that had grass growing, but the grass was dried up and dead just like every other plant was. That's when he came face to face with Megaton and the metal that covered it, this reminded Alex of castles that he had seen in both textbooks and in a few Grognak comics that he had.
Alex approached what must've been the gate to get into the heavily fortified settlement, that's when he noticed a robot at the gate which was different from the one he meet earlier, but what he really noticed was the jet turbine above the gate which was still working to Alex's Surprise. Coming up to the gate that's when the turbine started up and the metal gates started moving up, Alex ducked behind a rock and covered his ears do to the great amount of noise that was being produced.
After a minute Alex uncovered his ears and looked up, the loud noise was gone and the gate was opened to revel other gate inside. Making his way to the other gate the robot welcomed him to the settlement with a cowboy accent, which made Alex chuckle which he hadn't done so far today.
Opening the gate Alex wondered in and found a town inside of the metal fortress outside, this amazed Alex how he could go from a ruined town to a place that was the closest thing to civilization that could be found.
That's when a man wearing a duster coat with a badge on it and wearing a cowboy hat, walked up to Alex where he was standing. "Well I'll be damned your from that vault. Names Lucas Simms mayor and sheriff whenever needed, welcome to Megaton."
"Alex Steiner, it's nice to meet another person out here." Said Alex reaching out his hand to shake Lucas hand, both shook hands and Lucas couldn't help but be pleasantly surprised.
"Well mannered and polite, it's nice to see that in people out here. Just holler if you need anything." Said Simms.
That's when Alex knew how Lucas could help him out." I was Actually looking for my father, middle-aged guy. Have you seen him here?"
Lucas shook his head before looking back at Alex again. "Sorry kid, I have so much to here I can't keep tack of ever visitor that comes to town. You might want to ask around town." Said Lucas
Alex was disappointment by the answer that he got, but he knew if he looked around a little he would find his father. Thanking Simms for the help Alex headed down towards what looked like the town center, looking around he saw that the houses were made out of metal and that there were pipes going around the town.
Going on towards the center Alex saw what looked like a two headed cow eating what little grass there was, jumping back a little he had never seen anything like this so far in his travels; that's when Alex noticed that there was a bomb surrounded by water, but then he noticed it wasn't a normal bomb it was an atomic bomb. Alex wondered why the people here would build the town around a bomb that may or may not be active, but Alex didn't have any knowledge on bombs so he decided not to tamper with it knowing that it could blow if he tried to disarm it.
Alex turned around and took notice of what looked like a restaurant, with a bar and a sign hanging out with the name Brass Lateran on it. That's when he heard a growling coming from his stomach, which reminded him that during his hasty escape from the vault he'd forgotten to eat something today.
Coming up to the bar, Alex sat down on one of the stools at the bar, Alex then noticed another person sitting there who was eating an unknown type of meat which was impaled on a stick.
"Hey there stranger, what can I do for you?" Asked the brown haired woman, who was wearing a red jumpsuit.
Coming back to his sense, he looked at her and then answered. "Yeah actually, I was wondering if you've seen my father around here? He's middle-aged and has a suit like me."
She could only shake her before speaking again. " Sorry sweetie haven't seen your father around. But that is so sweet how you're looking for him, hope you find your father before it's too late."
Once again Alex was disheartened by the answer that he was given, but didn't dwell on this for too long and decided to grab something to eat." What do you got to eat?"
"Here you go sweetie, what sound's appetizing?" Said the woman as she handed Alex what looked like the menu which was pieces of paper in a clipboard.
Looking at the menu Alex noticed the different food items that were written on them: squirrel on a stick, iguana on a stick, mutfruit, and mirelurk cakes. Alex couldn't help but stare in confusion at the menu after viewing the items names; never in his life had he heard of such weird names for food, but luckily for him the restaurant had noodles on the menu which had to be the most appetizing thing on there.
"I'll have the noodles please." Alex said, while he handed back the menu.
The woman grabbed the clipboard and placed it under the bar, and brought her attention back to Alex. " That will be seven caps please."
Alex was imminently confused by this; he wondered what would she want with bottle caps, they were nothing but trash to be thrown away after opening up a Nuka-Cola, never to be seen again.
"I'm sorry miss, but I don't have any caps on me. What do you want with bottle caps?"
"Well I guess that figures since your from that vault, you wouldn't know anything about caps. I'll tell you what since you've been so nice, I'll help you out a little." The woman said putting a hand on his shoulder.
After a while of explaining how bottle caps worked out here in the wasteland, Alex got a better understanding of how things worked out here. Alex couldn't believe that he had to pay for his own food, every meal that he'd eaten before this pint was free to the vault resident's.
Thinking on how he could get caps so he could get supplies for the journey ahead of him. "Where do you think I could get some caps?" Asked Alex
"I think you should try Moriarty's Saloon there's people that could use help, and they'll probably pay good." The woman answered back.
That's when Alex got up and prepared to head towards Moriarty's Saloon to look for work to gather caps for the road ahead. Thanking the woman for helping him out with learning how things worked out here, and learned her name which was Jenny Stahl.
Making his way up the walkway which was made out of sheet metal, he noticed the saloon which was higher than any other building in Megaton. Making it to the door of the saloon, Alex stopped in order to gather himself for whatever was going to be inside.
Climbing the stairs Alex got closer to the Atrium and to the sounds of the same flamer he heard down stairs accompanied by British accent as well. Alex realized that it was Andy the Mister Handy robot who was fighting off radroaches, but there was someone else fighting roaches alongside Andy who looked like he was part of vault security.Moving forward's with his bat ready to swing at the officer, if he became hostile at the sight of Alex Getting closer to the officer he finally realized it was Gomez, hopefully he wouldn't attack him.
Gomez turned to see Alex standing in the hallway, holding his bat in both hands ready to swing."whoa, easy their kid I don't want to harm you. Look, whatever you're planing on doing just get out of here and I'll pretend I never say you." Said Gomez, as he stepped to the side.
Lowering his bat Alex started walking towards the door leading him closer to the overseer's office, but stopped when he was close to Gomez and faced him. "Thank you, I won't forget what you did for me.""Your a good kid, you never did anything to deserve this. Now go find your dad if you can." Said Gomez, staying where he was as he watched Alex walk away.
Shocked by the death of two people, Alex dropped his bat alerting the two officers to his presence and started shooting at Alex. Coming back to his senses he began to run to the overseer's office, ignoring the many radroaches that were crawling all over the place. After getting through the roaches and the control room, Alex heard voices coming from a room up ahead. Sneaking up to a window, he saw Amata sitting in a chair who looked like she was being interrogated by the overseer and officer Mack.
